The Festival of Stocks

Welcome to the Fifth Edition of the Festival of Stocks! If you are new to Stock Market Beat, we hope you’ll have a look around.

The Festival of Stocks is a blog carnival dedicated to highlighting bloggers’ best articles on stock market related topics. This will include research and commentary on specific stocks, industry analysis, ETFs, REITs, stock derivatives, and other related topics. Hosts are encouraged to be selective, limiting the number of posts to about 20. If a submission was not closely related to investing in stocks it was excluded. We also list the articles in rough order of how much we liked them.

Value Discipline’s Rick: A Legg Man?

ValueBlogger was asked “What’s the point of studying the fundamentals? I know things can be cheap and all but really how can you outsmart a team of analysts?” His answer is not all that different from the one we would give. But our 10 years in the profession also showed us that nine times out of ten the analysts have no idea of the true fundamentals.

Traders Insights looks at MGM and likes what he sees. We must admit, with this cash cow in his stable we were somewhat perplexed as to why Kirk Kerkorian was messing around with something like GM rather than buying out the public float on this bad boy.

George at Fat Pitch Financials looks at Building Materials Holding Corp. (BMHC). Instead of a wide moat, he sees a company that is surrounded by alligators.
MillionDollarCountDown tells us to rent out our stocks – his down-to-earth description of covered call writing. We like the strategy too, but think MillionDollar should describe what would happen if Google fell 20% while the strategy was being performed.

Guzzo the Contrarian wonders if something is going on at mutual fund holding company Integrity Mutual Funds. With a company owned by two of its fund managers accumulating shares, it seems like a good question.
If you think we’re gloomy, you should get a load of Rebuilding Eden’s predictions for the future.

Frugal (My 1st Million at 33) compares ETFs to mutual funds and says the choice may depend on why you are investing.

2million (My Journey to Financial Freedom) shows us the ropes of transferring funds between online brokers.
Next Week’s Festival will be held at Gold Guru.
